Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming (1820 – 1866) was a Scottish traveller and sportsman, known as the "lion hunter". From his early years he was distinguished by his passion for sport. He was educated at Eton, England, and at eighteen joined the East India Company's service as a cornet in the Madras Light Cavalry. The climate of India not suiting him, after two years he retired from the service and returned to Scotland. During his stay in the East he had laid the foundation of his collection of hunting trophies and specimens of natural history. In 1843 he joined the Cape Mounted Rifles, but for the sake of absolute freedom sold out at the end of the year and with an ox wagon and a few native followers set out for the interior of Africa. He hunted chiefly in Bechuanaland and the valley of the Limpopo River, regions then swarming with big game. In 1848 he returned to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The story of his exploits is vividly told in his book, Five Years of a Hunter's Life in the Far Interior of South Africa." The famous outdoors author and publisher Horace Kephart abridged the original two volume work, titling it as "The Lion Hunter", stating "The original work is diffuse, and many of its pages are no more than a gruesome and tiresome catalogue of slaughter. I have here selected the best parts of the two volumes, without changing the text, and offer this abridgement under title of "The Lion Hunter," taken from the author's own soubriquet."
The Lion Hunter Roualeyn GordonCumming Horace Kephart
A very good hunter's perspective of what the South African interior and large-game hunting was like, back in the middle of the 19th century when it had to be conducted via oxen-drawn wagons and, in this case, Gordon-Cumming's hunting expedition lasted for twelve months. This is a true 'trek'!On the slightly-negative side, the script is pretty small, since this Kindle edition is reproduced from the original text ..and it may be a challenge for those blessed with 'less-than-the-best-vision'?

The Lion Hunter Roualeyn GordonCumming Horace Kephart Reviews
I love a good a good historical story about safaris and wildlife stories. If that is your thing you will like this one as well
This is an excellent account of African hunting in the golden years of the mid 1800's. Unlike most African white hunter books which are set in British East Africa, the setting in South Africa is unique as are the references to the local natives and the geography of the hunting grounds. The author does a good job of describing all aspects of the hunting treks, the methods used, the firearms, and the contributions (or lack thereof) of the native help. If one can set aside the modern ethics of game conservation and overlook the horrendous amount of animals wounded and left to die during the hunts, it makes for very enjoyable reading. Anyone reading this book should begin by considering the era, the seemingly unlimited amount of wildlife that existed in Africa at that time, and the different moral standards of the day. As an avid reader of African hunting history, I consider this book to be a must read for similar enthusiasts.
It was almost ok
