An essay about a signature era of modern history and a counterargument to those who imagine that we would benefit from a return to the values of that era. Marriage and sex always tell us more about living history than a focus on generals and politicians. Warning This text contains explicit discussions of human sexuality. Adults only, please! NOT FOR ANYONE OFFENDED BY DISCUSSION OF HUMAN SEXUALITY IN ALL ITS VARIATIONS. Dan Agin's most recent book is FOOLS AND FRAUDS HOW MODERN PSYCHIATRY FUMBLED THE ORIGINS OF MENTAL ILLNESS (Spectrum Focus, 2011). He is also the author of BLACK AND WHITE IN AMERICA (Spectrum Focus. 2010); HUMAN SEXUALITY AND CHARLES DARWIN (Spectrum Focus, 2011); MORE THAN GENES WHAT SCIENCE CAN TELL US ABOUT TOXIC CHEMICALS, DEVELOPMENT, AND THE RISK TO OUR CHILDREN (Oxford University Press. 2010), and the author of JUNK SCIENCE HOW POLITICIANS, CORPORATIONS, AND OTHER HUCKSTERS BETRAY US (St. Martin´s Press/Thomas Dunne Books. 2006). For those who have studied Victorian history and literature, the ugly undercurrents prove to be the reverse of the staid middle class facade. This brief essay may be used to ponder why in the twenty-first century we are still forced to deal with antifeminist, misogynist, and homophobic animus evidenced in much of our legislation. As one becomes aware of the Victorian thoughts and feelings still lingering in his or her psyche, one may be able to surmount them and move to a more educated and humanistic acceptance of one's humanity. Homo sum a me nihil humani alienem puto, (Terentius).

An Evil Age An Essay on Marriage and Sex in the Victorian Era eBook Dan Agin Reviews

This was a very quick, but informative read. I'm a scientist, not a historian, so I'm content to have my historical tales "pre-digested" for me. I think this was an interesting overview of the time, and it was interesting to place the strange behaviors and ethics of the time into such a historical context.
