When Denver stay-at-home mom Becky Montgomery caught her husband of 20 years in their bed with another woman, she never dreamed her three children would blame her for the resulting divorce. Feeling like maternal failures, she and two friends (feisty PI Sam and No-One's-Accused-Me-Of-Being-Mother Teresa) form the Bad Mothers Club in order to deal with their various child-related heartaches more positively.
When her ex-husband, Jack, is accused of murdering Becky's first post-divorce date, the Bad Mothers set out to prove his innocence, but only for the sake of her children. These Bad Mothers have faced everything from terrible twos and sleep deprivation to rebellious teens and heartbreak - they're not about to let a mere murderer stop them from winning the Worst Mother of the Month award.

Murder Is Misunderstood A The Bad Mothers Club Cozy Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Heather Horrocks Amanda Rinzel Books Reviews
While all the standard elements of a cozy mystery are there, Heather Horrocks did a nice job adding some unusual twists. I really appreciate the way she added a legitimate PI to the mix, since my pet peeve with this style of mysteries is the woman who decides to investigate without any good motivation or qualifications. it was entertaining AND believable - a nice mix!
This is a good book to read when you are feeling that your life has been unfair - because the main person is struggling under a huge load of bad stuff that has come to her, through no fault of her own. Just when things cannot get worse, she gets involved in a murder and needs more than her own skills to handle it. Her somewhat unlikely new friends supply needed backup and emotional strength, and they share their own unique support system. Enjoyed it!
I love reading Heather Horrock's books. She never disappoints me, in fact I can't put them down. They're always intriguing, and have very in-depth characters, plots, and more twists and turns then you can keep up with it. I especially love all the funny and interactive dialogue. And this book is long.
Cute and fun is how I would describe this book. Before I read this book, I never knew what a “cozy mystery” was, and now I’m hooked. The author does an excellent job of describing her characters - she made me feel like I knew them. I found Becky to be quite lovable and the book accomplished just what this type of book should - entertain!
Thank you thank you thank you....I can't thank you enough Ms. Calman! I love to read anything that reads well, has engaging characters, interesting dialog and is entertaining. I had just attempted to read the most odious book this year, ended up not finishing it and wrote a scathing review. I then went shopping for something, anything that was even half well written. I found your book, thought I'd try it and I'm so happy I did! I can't wait to read more of your writings so please don't stop. You keep writing, I'll keep reading. Complete symbiotic relationship! Thank you again.
I was soooooo disappointed in this book. I have read several others by Heather Horrocks, and the ones that I've read already were significantly better than this one. Had this been my first, I don't know that I would have read any others.
First of all, she took 9 chapters to say what could have been said in 2. While I can't say that I wouldn't be the same way as Becky in real life, hearing over and over and over about Jack and Jill got seriously annoying. Jack cheated on her. Check. Jack and Jill make an annoying nursery rhyme couple. Check. She hadn't been out with anyone else for over 2 decades. Check. I got it the first time!!! Whether or not this is realistic, it's not necessary in a novel. Once the point has been made, it's enough. I was so close to not finishing the book several times. I kept listening, hoping that it would get better.
Then it did start to get better. The murder mystery part was pretty good. I may have bumped it up to a 3 at that point if it weren't to all the references to sex. There was certainly no graphic or descriptive sex -- there wasn't even any kissing. For my taste, the subject just came up way too many times in what was otherwise a very clean book.
Having said all that, I did like the characters. I may think about giving the second one in the series a try -- if I run out of things to read...
This new cozy by Heather Horrocks introduces some interesting characters and a premise that will resonate with most mothers. Three friends with different life experiences feel unsure and underappreciated when faced with the anger, resentment and angst associated with childrearing. Instead of wallowing in depression, the three women laugh and support each other during both the bad and the good times.
Becky caught her husband and his mistress in her bed and was so upset she gave him a black eye. Their 16 year old Goth daughter insists that she try harder to win him back or the daughter will move in with the father and his girlfriend. Becky's first date (chosen with the intention of making her soon to be ex jealous) is universally despised and ultimately murdered. The three friends combine forces to find the killer to remove suspicion from Becky's ex-husband.
The plot was well developed but my reason for downgrading this to three stars was the descriptions of all the characters. The three leading women are drop dead gorgeous and seem to have men in the palms of their hands. The men are all devastatingly handsome and eager to date Becky. The only "normal" people in this book are the children and their reactions to their parents situation range from sad to unrealistic. I hope that Horrocks makes her characters more believable in future novels. I liked the premise of "less than perfect" parents but I would prefer if they were "less than perfect" physically too.
I Love Heather Horrocks books, and her mysteries are really good .....so far I look for the next one, now working on the 3rd book.
